Energy and electric power

With the development of renewable energy technology, the use of renewable energy will exceed natural gas and become the second largest resource for electricity generation from 2010. Renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources, such as wind, sunlight, geothermal heat, tide, and ocean waves, etc. The costs of renewable energy will decrease as the renewable energy technology improves. It is expected that more renewable energy will be used in the electricity industry.

  • Wind power;
  • Compared to other types of energy resources, wind power has several advantages: it has a very large reserve; it is renewable; it has a widespread availability; and it is environmentally friendly. Wind power produces no greenhouse gasses during operations, such as carbon dioxide and methane. In China, it has a vast amount of wind power reserve with a widespread availability. According to Chinese statistics, there is a wind power potential of 2.5 billion kW on land; and a wind power potential of 7.5 billion kW on ocean. However, the wind turbines manufacturing industry in China is not strong. There is a lot of space to learn from foreign manufactures in wind power technology. If foreign wind companies could come to China, and co-develop some wind power projects, China will then be able to use more wind power and reduce pollutions. It will also release some pressure coming from energy shortage in China.

  • Solar power;
  • China has started developing solar technologies since the 1970's. Among several solar projects developed in China, there were two very successful solar products: solar hot water systems and thermal batteries. With nearly four decades of research and development, solar hot water systems and thermal batteries have gained many successes in the Chinese market. For China, the next goals of development in the solar energy industry would be using this renewable solar energy to generate electricity, especially in the western part of China.

  • Hydropower;
  • Hydropower is power that is derived from the force of moving water. Having many mountains, rivers, and falls in China, its geographic features are suitable for creating hydropower. However, according to statistics, China has only managed to use 20% of its hydropower potential, which is far from a satisfactory result. China urgently needs to improve its effectiveness and efficiency with developing water power technologies, for sustainable development of the economy.

  • Electric power plant;
  • With the fast development of the Chinese economy, demand for electricity has been increased ever so fast. However, there are many pollution and wastes issues with Chinese electricity power plants. Many power plants generate high levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses emissions during operations. The Chinese government urges many power plants to reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses and increase their energy efficiencies when generating power.
